The structure of galactic superclusters is examined as an indication of the large-scale structure of the universe, and implications for galaxy formation are discussed. The distributions of near Zwicky clusters in the Southern Hemisphere between 22 and 4 h were determined, taking into account galactic redshifts, and four superclusters were identified. The superclusters, namely Perseus, Pegasus, Cetus and Andromeda, are illustrated, and the prominent Perseus supercluster is considered in detail. Data are presented which indicate that Perseus is surrounded by chains of galactic clusters joining main density peaks, the rich clusters, which contain a low percentage of spiral galaxies and many radio galaxies; galactic density is small in the center of the supercluster. Neighboring superclusters are observed to be in contact, with large areas of cluster absence ('holes') also present in the space between superclusters. It is shown that the observed distributions of galaxies are inconsistent with gravitational clustering theories and with the formation of superclusters in a wholly gaseous medium, and a two-stage process for the formation of galaxies from nondissipative matter similar to that of Rees (1977, 1978) is proposed.
