A study has been made of the incidence of the ionospheric sporadic E-region in relation to metallic ions of meteor origin. It is found that the rate of meteor bursts is correlated with the activity of sporadic E-layer with a time-lag of one or two weeks. This implies that long lived metallic ions due to meteoric precipitation into the lower ionosphere contribute to the formation of sporadic-E. A possible loss process for metallic ions in the upper atmosphere is also discussed.
