Exact analytic solutions to the low frequency wave dispersion relation in a magnetized, warm electron, cold ion plasma show that the traditional kinetic Alfvén wave dispersion relation has a much more limited range of validity than previously assumed. In particular, at wavevector angles relative to the magnetic field smaller than 90 degrees it is shown that the Alfvén wave phase velocity is slower than that predicted by ideal magnetohydrodynamics, not faster as predicted by the traditional kinetic Alfvén wave dispersion relation. The analytic solutions are obtained from the determinant of the full 3x3 matrix equation [Hirose et al., Phys. Letters A330, 474 (2004)] involving all three wave electric field components Ex},E{y, and Ez in contrast to the traditional kinetic Alfvén wave dispersion which involves only Ex and Ez.
