The paper presents a 0.025 nm resolution profile of the O III forbidden 500.69 nm line in the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. The profile is separated into Gaussian components ranging from 3.3 nm to 0.1 nm full width at half maximum. The Fe II multiplet 42 is detected as one of the minor components in the red wing of the O III forbidden 500.69 nm line. A larger number of discrete high-velocity clouds is found than were observed by previous authors. The main result deals with the presence of a relatively broad O III forbidden line 500.69 nm feature, apparently blue-shifted by about 200 km/s with respect to the systematic velocity of the galaxy. These different contributions to the O III forbidden line emission are discussed in relation to the masses and energy amounts they imply. Finally, the implications of such an 'intermediate' case among Seyfert nuclei are discussed.
