Data obtained from the topside sounder satellite Alouette 1 and from ionospheric and magnetic ground stations have been used to investigate the validity of the Martyn theory for the formation of the equatorial anomaly. Day-to-day changes in the anomaly and in the magnetic variations have been compared using scatter plots and correlation coefficients. It is concluded that a highly significant correlation exists between the magnitude of the equatorial anomaly and the strength of the E-region currents flowing in the equatorial region.
