The seasonal variation of daily ionospheric noon absorption measurements (A1 method) during the IGY and the IGC at Tsumeb/SWA and Lindau/Harz is discussed. The frequencies used are 2·20 Mc/s, 2·75 Mc/s and 1·73 Mc/s, 2·23 Mc/s, respectively. At Tsumeb the seasonal variation of L values agrees fairly well with a cosn [chi] law of solar zenith angle [chi]. The exponent n is about 1·5. The monthly mean L values are treated by the method of Biblet al. (model C), giving the absorption parameters B and N, both varying with cosn [chi]; n is about 1·5 for B and about 3·0 for N. At Lindau the seasonal variation of L values is more complicated. Besides the summer maximum a still larger maximum is observed during the winter time. This winter anomaly is more distinct on the lower frequency than on the higher one. The splitting of the total absorption into a deviative and a non-deviative component according to the above method gives an N figure varying similar to cos [chi]. In each of the three years the curve has a distinct maximum superposed during the months December or January. Perhaps this maximum is caused by the same mechanism as the winter anomaly as a whole, but it occurs only when the winter anomaly is in its most severe state. The seasonal variation of the B values shows the same unexplained feature as that of the L values. The attempt to explain the phenomena with the model = of Biblet al. was not successful. It is believed that there is another absorption mechanism at the lower border of the E-region which should explain the winter anomaly and which is not yet described by the models hitherto discussed.
