Moldavites are usually found in gravels, soils and at three localities only in clays (brick-pits near C. Bud jovice, T ebo and Besednice). Sand, soil and clay are easily removable by washing in water. The remainder of unwashable soil can be removed with boiling HC1 and a steel needle. As of yet only carbonate or ferruginous cement has been found. No grains of minerals were ever observed tobe melted into the glass surfaces of moldavites. Etching experiments with HF have been made on obsidians and moldavites. Rotation of specimens has no influence on the etching process. Etching can be accelerated by higher temperature and concentration of HF. Sculptation of obsidians and moldavites developed by artificial etching with HF is very similar to natural sculptation. Previous etching results obtained by (1911) and (1911) have been confirmed. Based on the etching resistance of inner walls of larger undamaged bubbles in moldavites by 2.5% HF, we may deduce that the sculptation of moldavites is caused mainly by etching on the surface of the Earth. Numerous moldavites have been studied with a stereoscopic microscope between crossed polaroid plates, with benzene as the immersion liquid. Czech moldavites have more solid inclusions than Moravian ones. Solid inclusions are irregular grains of 0·1-1·0 mm dia. These grains are lechatelierite ( ). The adjacent moldavite glass is anisotropic around grains of lechatelierite. In a Czech moldavite of average size we can detect about 3-5 grains of lechatelierite. In an undamaged large bubble of a moldavite a vacuum corresponding to 35 mm of mercury was found.
