A total of 41 analyses for both zirconium and hafnium in natural materials are reported using the technique of neutron activation analysis. Included are analyses of 12 chondrites, 4 achondrites, 4 siderites, 1 meteoritic troilite, 1 meteoritic olivine, 9 tektites, 2 impact glasses, 2 deep-sea sediment cores, 1 obsidian and standard rocks W-1 and G-1. Cosmic atomic abundances for zirconium of 58 ( Si = 10 6 ) and for hafnium of 0.16 ( Si = 10 6 ) have been calculated on the basis of the chondrite analyses. The zirconium to hafnium weight ratio for most meteoritic materials is close to 200. This ratio is nearly an order of magnitude smaller for all terrestrial materials analysed in this work. On the basis of this ratio tektites are most similar to the terrestrial materials. Some implications of the data with respect to theories of nucleosynthesis and theories of meteorite and tektite formation are discussed.
