We present new observations pertaining to calcium ions obtained using a resonance lidar at Arecibo. The advantage of lidar observations over satellite is good temporal and spatial resolution over a given location. Thus, this allows us to compare the temporal and altitudinal variation of Ca+ and its comparison to the electron density (Ne) distribution obtained using incoherent scatter radar at Arecibo. This study reveals a broader Ca+ layer during the summer time, which appears to be due to downward transport processes around midnight. The peak of both Ca+ and Ne occurs around 95 km during the summer time, while they maximize ~ 100 km in the wintertime. In short, this investigation will focus on summer and winter differences, characteristics of average Ca+ distribution during these months and their relationship to sporadic-E.
