The changes in auroral particle precipitation, thermosphere and ionosphere are mainly due to the energy input from the solar wind and magnetosphere into the ionosphere. There are often periodic variations in auroral particle precipitation (such as auroral hemispheric power), thermospheric (e.g. O/N2 column density ratio) and ionosphere (e.g. TEC). These variations are found due to similar changes in the dayside magnetic merging rate which depends on both interplanetary magnetic field and solar wind plasma. The periodic variations cover periods from a few days to one solar rotation. The relative strengths of the different periodic variations depend on the phase of solar cycle. Most of the features in the periodic variations are found to repeat over different solar cycles, including the 23rd solar cycle. The characterization of these periodic variations in the auroral, thermospheric, and ionospheric response to external drivers can be applied to space weather forecasts. That application will be discussed.
