Tunneling of surface waves (which are also called ‘non-propagating’ or ‘evanescent mode’) in isothermal atmosphere is considered. Tunneling of 5-min oscillations in solar atmosphere is discussed. Phase lead of chromospheric oscillations with respect to photospheric oscillations (Tanenbaum et al., 1971) can be explained by tunneling only.
