An effort is made to place quantitative constraints on the differentiation caused by Io's well-over 100 episodes of partial melting, using a conceptual model in which partial melting is concentrated at a single depth. The buoyant liquids generated at this depth are transported toward the surface, and the dense residue sinks; the MELTS program is used to examine the differentiation occurring within the melting zone.
