It is argued that the moon's primitive mare melts were saturated with both olivine and low-Ca pyroxene at their source. Experimental data are presented that furnish the data needed to approximate a phase diagram that illuminates the petrogenesis of mare basalt. The MgO-SiO2-TiO2 ternary liquidus at high pressure is taken as a 'template' for the present discussion.
