Water masers are present in evolved stars, but until 2001 it was thought that they could not be found in planetary nebulae (PNe). We propose to carry out a survey for water maser emission in 106 post-AGB and planetary nebulae selected by their IRAS colours, with declination <-32deg. This is a continuation of our work with NASA's 70m antenna in Spain (for sources with decl > -32deg), in which we observed 109 such sources and detected water maser emission in 2 post-AGB and 4 PNe. This survey in southern sources will help us to confirm the results suggested for the northern ones: a) That the presence of water masers in PNe is not an extremely unlikely event (there are now 5 known cases). b) That post-AGB and PNe with water masers could constitute a special type of evolved objects (still to be defined), probably with massive progenitor stars. c) That water masers could be favoured in PNe over post-AGB stars in this special type of objects.
