A shape model of 951 Gaspra is derived using images obtained during the October 1991 Galileo flyby. The object's irregular shape requires the use of novel mapping and measurement techniques. The characteristics and implications of the shape model are described. It is noted, in particular, that Gaspra appears to be one coherent object and not a binary or collection of smaller bodies. The apparent continuity of structural features over the length of the asteroid strongly supports an interpretation that it is a single object and that it was derived from a substantially larger predecessor.
