Spectral data acquired by telescopes, orbiters, landers, and rovers are interpreted by comparison to spectral libraries developed from terrestrial minerals measured in laboratories. The focus of this work is to present the spectra of a suite of terrestrial iron sulfate minerals acquired using thermal emission spectroscopy and extended-visible/near infrared/midinfrared reflectance spectroscopy, and to classify their spectral character according to the wide variety of structural types of iron sulfate. Differences in molecular structure affect the vibrational modes and orbital energy levels of transition metal ions (i.e., charge transfer) of the minerals, resulting in distinct variations among the sulfate spectra. Iron sulfates are indicative of acidic conditions required for formation and previously have been identified on Mars.
