The Cassini radio occultations have measured the vertical distribution of electrons in Saturn's upper atmosphere covering a broad range of latitudes and longitudes. The observations have revealed a complex and highly variable ionosphere. Most of the electron density profiles have a rich structure of narrow, sharp layers just below the main electron density peak that vary in vertical extent and magnitude. We model the observed multi-layer structures as signatures of atmospheric gravity waves propagating at high altitudes. We use a self-consistent, two-dimensional model of Saturn's ionosphere that is coupled with an atmospheric gravity wave model to investigate the effect of waves on the vertical distribution of electrons and ions in Saturn's lower ionosphere. The results demonstrate that the observed layers can be explained with the presence of wave activity at ionospheric heights.
