Artificial Satellites: Angular Momentum
Scientific paper
Angular motions of the satellite Prognoz-9 are studied on the basis of data from the Oreol-1 star sensor. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) The satellite always has a positive angular acceleration. 2) On occasion, a significant and negative third time derivative of the angle arises. 3) There are occasionally discontinuities in the angular velocity. 4) There are simultaneous discontinuities in the angular acceleration. 5) There are indications of periodic oscillations of the rotation axis of the satellite. Anomalies in the rotation of the satellite (discontinuities in the angle, the velocity, and the acceleration) can be diagnosed conveniently by tracking the angular velocity.
