The effect of environment is an essential, but poorly understood ingredient in galaxy formation. We propose to measure the gas and dark matter in the clumps and filaments around two massive distant galaxy clusters. By combining high quality XMM data with our existing wide-field optical-NIR imaging and spectroscopy we will perform a census of the baryons in the large scale structure around these clusters and measure the effects of environment on the fundamental physical properties of the member galaxies. Combined with a stacked weak lensing analysis, the X-ray data will be used to perform the first test of the galaxy group mass-observable scaling relations in an LSS environment, thereby probing the role of environment on preheating in groups.
