The history of the military involvement in the U.S. space program is briefly described. The idea of a base on the Moon was seen by some in the military as an opportunity to use the Moon as a launch site for ballistic missiles. It is argued that the space shuttles were largely military vehicles. It is noted that the Air Force reluctantly agreed to allow all of its space payloads to be carried on the shuttle if NASA incorporated military requirements into the shuttle design and gave military missions priority.
