The highest priority augmentation of flight software in support of GHRS for build 4.0 is capability of return to brightest point of an SSA spiral search. This will allow a true flux peakup in the SSA, a sorely missed capability currently. There are two points that need verification and testing in support of flight software changes: 1) In SSA spiral what is optimal step-size? By doing a "brute-force" spiral search in this test we will accumulate valuable supporting information to facilitate rapid utility of new capibility with FSW 4.0. 2) The attenuated mirrors pick off only a small part of the beam, and introduce their own aberrations in the resultant PSF. It is not obvious that maximizing image placement for the mirrors, is same as that maximizing placement for the spectral elements. This proposal yields a direct test of possible mirror/dispersing element differences. This test will also provide valuable information on current alignment uncertainties for mirror A2.
