The present review examines research on polars, a class of close binary star systems characterized by a very large degree of radiation polarization (up to 35 percent), intense X-ray emission, and very intense magnetic fields. After a review of the standard model of polars and the magnetic valve and rocking dipole concepts, the review examines the development of an accretion column model and the concept of 'propellers' in magnetic close binary systems.
