We present VLT spectroscopy of the afterglow of GRB 030323. Lyαis detected in absorption at z=3.37 with an inferred column density of logN(HI)=21.90+/-0.07 cm-2. This is larger than any confirmed QSO-selected damped Lyman alpha HI column density, showing that GRBs probe very high density regions in their host galaxies, most likely regions that are actively forming stars. This clearly demonstrates the potential of probing high-redshift star-formation with GRB afterglows.
