Observations of airglow emitted from a circular region of sky 1600 km in diameter were made at Townsville during the period July-Nov. 1962. The results are compared with the behaviour of the ionospheric parameters [is proportional to]0F2 and h'F from stations in the neighbourhood of the observed airglow emitting region. A marked enhancement of airglow intensity which occurs after midnight in the northern sky during early summer is discussed in terms of electron density and molecular oxygen content as determined from the ionospheric parameters. It is shown that the latitude variations of observed airglow is in good agreement with theoretical behaviour based on ionospheric parameters.
