The close flypast of Jupiter's moon Io by the Galileo Orbiter on December 7, 1995 has provided a rare and important opportunity to test a theoretical model for the origin and bulk chemical composition of this body. The calculations suggest that the inner ~ 25% of Io's mass may consist of molten FeS with dissolved Ni, Co and Cu. This liquid core has a mean density of ~ 4.0 g/cm3. The outer ~ 75% of the satellite's mass consists chiefly of solid silicates of Fe, Mg, and Ca and has a mean density ~ 3.4 g/cm3. As a consequence, the mean axial moment-of-inertia factor of Io is predicted to be 0.390 +/- 0.002.
