This paper describes the objectives of the Global Thermospheric Mapping Study (GTMS), together with the data sources, the institutions and contributors involved, the satellites and the instruments, and the measurements obtained during the two observation campaigns conducted during June 26-28, 1984, and January 15-17, 1985. Special attention is given to the results obtained to date by the MIT group at Millstone Hill, Massachusetts, U.S. The solar and the geomagnetic conditions prevailing during the two measurement periods are summarized, and the operational modes utilized at the Millstone Hill radar are described, together with available results on the global thermospheric structure and dynamics. Work performed elsewhere on the GTMS data base is summarized.
