Scientific paper

A proton decay detector (Kamiokande) consisting of 3000 tonnes of water
and a Cerenkov counter was installed 1000 m underground, at 36.42 N,
137.31 E. It detected solar neutrino and supernova 1987A signals. The
advantages of the imaging water Cerenkov method and developments of the
counter are reviewed.
