Scientific paper

Problems with the standard model when confronted with grand unified theories are reviewed. The baryon-antibaryon asymmetry; the horizon problem of the Friedmann-Lemaitre model which would produce too many heavy monopoles, causing recollapse; the flatness problem of the density parameter; and the inflationary universe are discussed. Classical explanations of homogeneity and isotropy are summarized.
