Within the framework of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), a strategy has been developed to increase the efficiency of megachannel extraterrestrial assay and microwave observing program receivers by reducing the number of settings by multiples of hundreds to thousands. In the present method, the rotational frequencies of pulsars are used as references and are converted in a quasi-unique way into well-defined radio frequencies in the 1-10 GHz range. Three classes of pulsars are identified (those closest to the earth receiver, those closest to the extraterrestrial transmitter, and those closest to the radio-wave transmitter-receiver lines), and examples are given for possible SETI pulsar-aided strategies corresponding to these three cases. A project involved with hundreds of millions of solar-type stars is discussed.
