Part of the Coorong lagoon and its associated ephemeral lakes are characterised by microcrystalline sediments consisting predominantly of one or two of the following carbonates: aragonite, magnesian calcite, calcian dolomite, "ordered" dolomite, magnesite and hydromagnesite. The carbonate assemblages vary in accord with the Mg / Ca ratio of the water from which they were deposited. The Mg / Ca ratio apparently increases with the age of the environment and it is suggested that earlier-formed carbonates react with the saline water during periods of high pH to produce assemblages of higher Mg content.
