The fine structure, in both frequency and height scales, of midlatitude limited-range ionograms recorded during daylight hours is considered. The identification of F1-region TID wavetrains when extra traces are absent is shown to be made possible by quasi-horizontal trace segments which are found as a function of time to move to lower frequencies. The results suggest that the segments result from small-scale stratifications produced by saturation effects of atmospheric gravity waves.
