The recent progress concerning the knowledge about the physics of Anomalous Cosmic Rays (ACRs) will be reviewed. A comparison of the flux variations of ACRs with those of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) offers a diagnostic that helps to understand the processes resulting in solar modulation in great detail. This diagnostic is also sensitive to modulation processes in the outer rims of the heliosphere. Of particular interest is the modulation beyond the termination shock, i.e. in the heliosheath region, where in-situ measurements have not yet been made. Special emphasis will be put on the influence of the structure and the dynamics of the large-scale heliosphere on the ACR fluxes in order to discuss their usefulness as heliospheric probes.
