Intrinsic atmospheric and oceanic variability, ocean-atmosphere interaction, ocean-ice-atmosphere interaction, variability of solar outputs, lunar tides, volcanic eruptions, and variability of stratospheric ozone have been hypothesized as mechanisms for decadal-multidecadal climate variability. In this oral presentation, I will review the evidence for each of these mechanisms and propose areas where research thrusts should be directed for progress in gaining understanding and realizing potential predictability. I will also review the evidence for the importance of decadal-multidecadal climate anomalies on seasonal to interannual climate prediction.
