Collective hadronic behaviour, like string fusion or percolation of strings, in spite of producing a rise of the inelasticity of the collision give rise to an increasing of the average shower depth of maximum in the atmosphere cascade. The consequences of this fact for cosmic rays in the energy range 1016 to 1019ev are discussed.
