Coherent wave emissions in the form of wave packets are often observed in space plasmas. Examples are the almost monochromatic whistlers (lion roars) seen in the planetary magnetosheaths, ion cyclotron emissions in multi-ion plasmas observed near Io and Mars. Waves in such plasmas possess the general feature, namely the presence of maxima or minima in dispersion curves (ω/k-k). In the case of whistlers, a fully nonlinear theory of stationary waves is developed. It is shown that there is interesting class of solutions consisting of a sequence of wave packets. The characteristic wavenumber of the small-scale oscillations is determined by the wavenumber where the dispersion curve has a maximum. Such nonlinear waves provide a good candidate for explaining observations of coherent whistler emissions in the form of wave packets.
