Following the successful launch of the Ulysses spacecraft in October 1990 and the nominal operation of the scientific payload after the checkout, there is great expectation that the scientific data return from the first out-of-ecliptic mission will be considerable. The aim of the Ulysses Data System (UDS) is to facilitate the exchange of data between the instrument teams, thereby encouraging scientific research into the many heliospheric processes which will be investigated for the first time over a large range of heliographic latitudes. In the long-term, the UDS will mature into a European archive for Ulysses data.
