Measurements of granule contrast are reviewed and compared to predictions of recent inhomogeneous models to derive an expression for the wavelength variation that is to be expected on the assumption of black-body emission. Measurements confined to wavelengths of 5200-5560 A show good agreement with results of Bray and Loughhead (1977), Wittmann and Mehltretter (1977), Wittmann (1979), and Alissandrakis et al. (1982). The difference in effective temperature between granules and intergranular lanes is about 270-280 K.
