The size-frequency distribution of asteroidal dust in the solar system is usually discussed in terms of a collisional cascade, a process first described by Dohnanyi (1969). In these discussions, dust is produced by the gradual comminution of large objects into small particles and the emphasis is on the equilibrium configuration. However, dust is also created by impact processes in the regoliths of asteroids, particularly in those asteroids that are rubble-piles, and the size-frequency distribution of this dust is determined by quite different considerations. It is possible that the recent disruption of a few small rubble-piles is the dominant source of asteroidal dust in the solar system. We discuss the evidence for this statement and its implications for the origins of asteroidal IDPs, for the time variation of the magnitude of the zodiacal cloud, and for circumstellar disks.
