Stunning understandings were achieved during and following the IGY about the influences of the Sun and the interplanetary medium on the Earth's space environment, as well as of their effects on technologies and systems that can be affected by the environment. A coordinated study of the interplanetary medium in the IHY that would result in more deep understandings of the heliosphere would simultaneously provide unprecedented opportunities for deeper understandings of operative physical processes in near Earth space -- the magnetosphere and ionosphere. Plans in many nations presently exist for systematic and comprehensive studies of the space environment near Earth in the future. The United States has recently completed a decadal Survey study that comprehensively covers near Earth as well as solar and heliosphere research prior to, and during the prospective IHY. The aspects of the results from this Survey related to the space physics of the Earth's environment that will contribute to, and benefit from, a concentrated study of the heliosphere, as well as plans in other nations, will be discussed.
