The general form of the energy transfer expression taking into account dimensional analysis constraints which depend on energy coupling assumptions regarding the importance of MHD flow effects, ionospheric conductivity effects through Birkeland currents, and viscous coupling, is obtained and then specialized to specific coupling mechanism assumptions. Electromagnetic coupling yields the most restrictive formulas for energy transfer, and the modifications required by the addition of viscous or finite-gyroradius effects are well defined but small. Solar wind plasma entry energy transfer assumptions lead to expressions that are equivalent to those based on assumptions of electromagnetic or viscous coupling. A well-defined set of solar wind parameters is presupposed by all energy transfer formulas discussed.
