It is proposed that Halley's Comet be spectroscopically observed by means of an intensified detector, comprising a photodiode array fixed on the screen of an image tube intensifier whose coupling device is a rectangular fiber optics prism. Such a detector will allow the extension of the useful spectral range of CCDs to 120 nm. Observations would be conducted either at high altitude observatories, which can be reached by OH, NH, CN and CO2(+) emissions, or aboard stratospheric balloons, which permit the measurement of the NO, CO, and CO(+) bands near 200 nm as well as the detection of the forbidden (1S - 3P) line of oxygen at 192.7 nm.
