Reasons for the scarcity of definitive radio and radar data of comets are discussed. Passive continuum and spectral line observations are covered. Explanations for the unsucessful molecular searches include instrument insensitivity by at least a factor of ten, a paucity of bright comets in the past eight years, an inadequate selection of optimum targets, and poor decisions concerning the best transitions for detecting a given species. Further problems include antenna temperature upper limits usually much greater than 0.1 K, and upper limits to the mean column density averaged over the telescope beam and to the gas production rate above what can be expected from visible, UV, and radio OH data.
