We calculate the splitting of gravitationally lensed images in the general static cylindrically symmetric vacuum spacetime, as would be found, for example, around a straight cosmic string with unresolved small-amplitude waves. We also use the results to examine the zero-width limit for the source. We find that beyond the weak field approximation this limit cannot be taken unless the exterior metric is conical. In this case we find the relation between the angle deficit of the cone and integrals of the energy-momentum tensor of the source.
