Ring-diagram analysis (or more simply, ring analysis) has been used for the past 16 years to study global-scale flows, large-scale convective flows, and the interactions between flows and active regions. The technique has been further adapted to measure the thermodynamic structure beneath active regions. In this paper, I review the progress that has occurred in these areas and discuss the variety of ring-analysis techniques that have been developed. I will also address the current challenges and future prospects involved in preparing for the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) to be flown in 2007 aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).
