The Ritchey-Chretien (A), concurrent (B), Gregorian (C), heliostat-single spherical mirror (D), and heliostat-Cassegrain Schiefspiegler systems (D) are considered in view of the large European solar telescope requirements, e.g., as to number of optical elements, field of view, and instrument polarization. The 0.1 arcsec spatial resolution can only be met by using a multiple element window with any of the systems. Systems A, B, and C meet the need for low polarization. Systems D and E provide largest field of view. System D has two mirrors, B, C, and E have four. Direct pointing approaches (A, B, C) produce thermal problems, but thermal control, using heat rejecting systems, can overcome these for cases A and B. System C has no heating of the secondary mirror. Overall, systems A, B, and C best match specifications.
