Functional and climatic conditions which influence the location and design of the large European solar telescope (LEST) are discussed, and the integration of the whole facility, especially dome and telescope, is advocated. The LEST dome-mount proposed consists of two sections with a lower horizontal joint and upper inclined circular joint. The primary mirror can be supported by a ring attached to the upper section. The optical element can be integrated with, or separated from, the tube vacuum enclosure. A 35 m tower lifts the instrument clear of ground convection turbulence, and a conical closed concrete structure has the necessary aerodynamic and vibration properties. A prestressed cable network roof structure, with tube columns is suggested.
