Magnetic field fluctuations measured by the two Helios spacecraft between 2.4 x 10 to the -5th and 1.3 x 10 to the -2nd Hz at distances from the sun between 0.29 and 1.0 AU are studied using statistical methods in an investigation of the temporal and spatial evolution of MHD waves and discontinuities in the solar wind. It is shown that nonfrequency dependent statistical properties of directional MHD fluctuations in the solar wind do not change significantly with increasing radius, with the exception of the distribution of minimum variance normals that are broader at aphelion than at perihelion. It is concluded that the fluctuations as a function of frequency evolve differently up to about 0.4 AU and further outside, and the MHD spectra from 0.29 to 0.40 AU are generally flatter than those further outside with the greatest differences at low frequencies.
