An empirical-statistical method is proposed for estimating the optical depth of a source of radio emission. Through an analysis of statistical distributions of the parameters of the corpuscular and electromagnetic radiation of solar flares it is shown that microwave radio bursts on the sun are generated by electrons which reach the earth's orbit with an energy of more than 40 keV. The results of a number of earlier reports on this subject are brought into agreement.
