The possible properties of a generator of electromagnetic energy on the open magnetopause of the tail as an element of the equivalent circuit of the magnetosphere are investigated. It is concluded that the primary generator is a voltage source which has the usual electrical coupling through the current with the magnetospheric-ionospheric load. The variations of the source are controlled by the electromagnetic conditions in the solar wind, leading the time of the current variation in view of the presence of inductance in the circuit. The power of the generator is determined both by the external (the energy function ɛ) and internal (the effective conductivity of the load) parameters. However, the latter does not indicate the presence of strong positive feedback between the generator and the load.
