This review is devoted to one of the themes of the STEP program "Common mechanisms in the solar-terrestrial system." Common structural features are isolated: boundary layers, current systems, flare loops and ejections, double layers, magnetospheres, and universal mechanisms responsible for their formation are discussed. The role of self-consistent electrodynamic couplings in transport processes in a plasma is illustrated by the example of diffusion of plasma in a magnetic field. In conclusion the trends in the development of the physics of cosmic plasma are discussed.
